Icheon, city in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea
Icheon is a city in southeastern Gyeonggi Province, about one hour from Seoul and well connected by major roads. It serves as a regional center for ceramic crafts, rice production, and light industry, with numerous workshops, markets, and modern facilities alongside one another.
Icheon was part of the Mahan Confederacy in ancient times and later became a key site under various Korean kingdoms including Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla. During the Joseon Dynasty, the city grew into a center for porcelain production that supplied the royal court and nobility.
The name Icheon comes from King Taejo of Goryeo and means "beneficial stream". The city remains deeply tied to pottery, with artisans actively working in studios and villages throughout the area, keeping ceramic traditions alive and passing them to new generations.
Icheon is reached by bus from Seoul's Express Bus Terminal in about one hour, or you can take a taxi for quicker connections within the city. The tourist information center at Seolbong Park offers maps and information and makes a good starting point for exploring the area.
The city became the first in South Korea to gain UNESCO Creative City status for ceramics in 2010, highlighting its place in the global network of craft traditions. This recognition reflects how Icheon preserves ancient techniques while promoting innovation in ceramic art and education.
