The Cathedral of Saint John is a house of worship in the Bundang district that blends Gothic and contemporary architectural styles. Its interior features a soaring central nave crossed by tall stained glass windows that cast colored light throughout the space.
The parish was established on January 7, 1993, within the Diocese of Suwon. The church building was dedicated to Saint John the Apostle on October 3, 2003. In 2017 it was one of the churches that hosted the Sistine Choir on its first visit to South Korea.
The spiral stairway carries a spiralling mural that starts with the creation story in Genesis at its base, passes through the life and Passion of Jesus, and ends with illustrations from the Acts of the Apostles. At the foot of the walkway stands a full-size replica of Michelangelo's Pietà, made by Franco & Cervietti.
The building sits centrally in Bundang-dong and is easy to reach for visitors. Regular worship services take place, so check ahead to avoid interrupting private prayer times.
The organ was custom-built by the Karl Schuke workshop in Berlin, with 65 stops and 5,124 pipes. It was made for this church rather than adapted from an existing instrument.
