Gwanaksan, Mountain peak in Gwanak District, South Korea
Gwanaksan is a mountain in the southern part of Seoul, spanning the Gwanak and Geumcheon districts as well as the nearby cities of Anyang and Gwacheon. It forms the central point of a long ridge with forested slopes and a rocky summit area.
In traditional Korean geography, Gwanaksan was counted among the five principal peaks of Gyeonggi Province, giving it a recognized place in regional identity across centuries. This standing connected the mountain to ritual and administrative traditions that shaped how the surrounding area was understood.
The temple Yeonjuam sits built into the cliffside rock near the summit, showing how Buddhist communities shaped their sacred spaces around natural stone. Visitors can see how the walls and roof merge directly with the rock face, making the structure feel like part of the mountain itself.
The main trails start from Seoul National University, Gwacheon Station, and Sadang Station, and each path takes about two hours to reach the top. Sturdy footwear is important, as the rocky sections can become slippery in wet conditions.
Gwanaksan was designated as a city park in 1968, making it one of the few peaks in Seoul reachable directly by subway without long connections. Because of this, many locals use it for short outings on weekday mornings, not just on weekends.
