The park's name comes from Nanjido, the island formed by the landfill that once stood here; the site was closed and turned into parkland for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. It is one of five World Cup Parks created in Mapo District for the tournament, alongside the neighbouring World Cup Park grounds in Sangam-dong and Seongsan-dong.
The park is walkable and offers ample parking for car visitors. Those arriving by bicycle can use rental services or dedicated cycling paths that run throughout the grounds.
