Shalqar, Salt lake in Western Kazakhstan.
Shalqar is a salt lake in Western Kazakhstan located approximately 75 kilometers southeast of Uralsk. The water body extends roughly 18 kilometers from north to south and about 14 kilometers from west to east.
The lake formed from the ancient Khvalynsky Sea, which connected to the Caspian Sea during prehistoric times. The geological development reflects how the Caspian depression once extended across a wider area before retreating.
The shores served as settlement grounds for nomadic groups whose descendants became part of the modern Kazakh population. This location held significance in the migration patterns of early peoples across Central Asia.
The water contains high salt concentration with chloride-sodium minerals, magnesium, and calcium similar to marine composition. Visitors should be aware that this mineralization makes the water quite different from freshwater lakes.
Three rivers feed the lake: Isen Ankaty, Sholak Ankaty, and Solyanka. This water supply sustains the lake's volume and carries nutrients that affect the biological activity within it.
