Karachaganak Field, Erdgasfeld in Kasachstan
Karachaganak Field is a large oil and gas deposit located in West Kazakhstan beneath the land surface. The field contains multiple reservoir layers made of carbonate rock, with thick layers of gas and oil stored deep underground, where a substantial gas layer sits above an oil layer.
The field was discovered in the late 1970s and production began in the early 1980s. Since then, multiple international companies including Shell, ENI, Lukoil, and Chevron have worked together on its development, with Kazakhstan increasing its stake through state company KazMunayGas in recent years.
The field is located in remote western Kazakhstan in an area defined by industrial operations. Visitors should know this is an industrial facility not open for casual visits and operates under strict safety protocols.
The field contains sour gas with hydrogen sulfide that requires special processing facilities to make it safe for use. The deposit also shows pressure losses in some areas, which is why injection projects are being carried out to maintain production.
