Altay Botanical Garden

The Altay Botanical Garden is a large property holding over 7,000 plant species across more than 100 hectares and divided into specialized sections for regional and international varieties. The collection ranges from native mountain plants to more exotic specimens and is organized by scientific departments like tree study and medicinal plants.

The garden was established in 1935 by the Soviet Academy of Sciences and initially served as a research facility for botanical study. In 2006 it received the status of a nationally protected natural area of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The garden showcases mountain plants native to the Altai region and is valued by locals who walk through to connect with the flora around them. It gives visitors a sense of what grows naturally here and why these plants matter to the community.

The garden is easy to explore on foot and most areas are well marked, so visitors can walk on their own or join guided tours. Wear comfortable shoes as the property is large and requires considerable walking.

The property houses around 2,000 plant species that grow naturally in the mountains surrounding Ridder and displays their diversity in an organized setting. This collection reveals how botanically rich this mountain region of Kazakhstan truly is.
