Shaitankol

Shaitankol is a mountain lake with an oval shape located in the Karkaraly mountains at about 1200 meters elevation, surrounded by steep rocky cliffs with deep blue water. The lake sits in an isolated alpine valley framed by towering rock faces.

The lake served as a navigation landmark for traders traveling through the mountains during the Silk Road era in central Kazakhstan. This connection to ancient trade routes shows its role in the region's historical geography.

The name Shaitankol comes from local stories and means Devil's Lake, connected to old tales about mysterious disappearances near this place. This naming reflects how the landscape has shaped the beliefs and imagination of people living in the region.

Reaching the lake requires a demanding hike along the ecological trail that runs through Karkaraly National Park. Few facilities are available near the water, so visitors should prepare accordingly before heading out.

The water contains high levels of salt and minerals, creating special conditions for specialized aquatic organisms to thrive. These unusual water properties also attract migratory birds that stop here during their journeys.
