Shaitankol, Salt lake in Karkaraly National Park, Kazakhstan
The oval-shaped lake sits at 1200 meters elevation, surrounded by steep cliffs and displaying deep blue waters in the Karkaraly mountain range.
The lake gained recognition during the Silk Road period when traders used it as a navigational point through the mountainous terrain of central Kazakhstan.
Local inhabitants named the lake Shaitankol, meaning Devil's Lake, following numerous tales of unexplained disappearances of hunters in the surrounding area.
The lake requires a substantial hike along an ecological trail through Karkaraly National Park, with limited facilities available near the water body.
The lake's water contains high concentrations of salt and minerals, creating specific conditions that support specialized aquatic organisms and migrating birds.
