Mangyshlak experimental Botanical Garden

Mangyshlak experimental Botanical Garden is a protected facility in Aktau spread across 39 hectares that grows over 1,500 species of trees and shrubs. All these plants have adapted to survive in the arid climate that characterizes this region of Kazakhstan.

Established in 1972, this facility became an important scientific research center operating under Kazakhstan's Science Committee. Since its founding, it has worked to study and document the plant species native to the Mangystau region.

The botanical garden shows visitors how plants native to the Mangystau region survive and thrive in harsh desert conditions through their remarkable adaptations. Walking through it reveals the importance of preserving local plant knowledge and protecting species that depend on this arid environment.

The garden is open year-round in Aktau, though conditions are very hot and dry throughout the year. Bring sun protection and plenty of water since the grounds are expansive with little shade available.

Researchers at this facility discovered seven new plant species through field expeditions, including a distinctive artemisia variety found nowhere else. These discoveries demonstrate that the region still holds botanical secrets waiting to be uncovered.
