Following Alexander the Great's conquest in 334 BCE, the settlement changed from its Phoenician name Baalbek to Heliopolis under Greek and Roman rule.
The annual Baalbek International Festival presents performances of opera and orchestral music against the backdrop of ancient Roman architecture.
The archaeological site maintains regular visiting hours from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM in summer and until 4:00 PM in winter.
The stone blocks in the Temple of Jupiter's foundation rank among the largest man-moved objects in history, with individual pieces weighing up to 800 tons.
