Keserwan District

Keserwan District is an administrative region in the mountains north of Beirut, encompassing green hills and coastal areas along the Mediterranean. Jounieh functions as its main city and administrative hub, where government offices, commerce, and coastal activity concentrate.

The area took its name from Muqadam Kisra of Baskinta, who held authority in the region during earlier periods. During the Crusades, this territory marked the northern frontier of the Kingdom of Jerusalem before shifting under later powers.

Maronite Christianity shapes the spiritual character of this region, with churches and religious sites woven into the local landscape and community calendar. These traditions influence how people gather, celebrate, and organize their daily rhythms throughout the year.

The region is easily accessible from Beirut via the coastal road, and Jounieh offers all essential services and accommodations for visitors. The mountainous interior has narrow roads, so local knowledge or an experienced driver helps with navigation.

Influential families like the Assaf dynasty and the Khazen clans received recognition from Sultan Selim I as chief administrators governing the region between Beirut and Tripolis. These family networks shaped the district's political and social structure for generations.
