Slave Island is a neighborhood in Colombo built around Beira Lake, with numerous shops, hotels, and commercial establishments throughout its streets. The area functions as an active business district where restaurants and vendors line the roads daily.
The area earned its name during Portuguese colonial rule when it served as a settlement zone for enslaved people from Africa. Later it developed into a commercial and residential quarter under British administration.
