General Post Office, Colombo, Historic post office in Fort district, Colombo, Sri Lanka
The General Post Office in Colombo is a postal building in the Fort district with characteristic Edwardian features. The structure displays three architectural column orders: Doric columns in the basement, Ionic elements on the ground level, and Corinthian details in the upper stories.
Construction of the postal building began in 1891 and was completed in 1895. The project was designed by Herbert Frederick Tomalin from the Public Works Department and overseen by local master mason Arasi Marikar Wapchi Marikar.
The building reflects British colonial influence through its classical European design elements and colonial architecture style. Visitors can see today how this blend of styles shaped the appearance of the Fort district.
The building is located in the central Fort district of Colombo, where many other historic sites can be found. The location is easily walkable and accessible by public transportation.
The building was constructed on the site of a former rock quarry. This transformation of a raw material extraction site into an important administrative center shows Colombo's urban development.
