Puttalam District

Puttalam District is an administrative area in Sri Lanka's North Western Province that includes coastal regions with lagoons alongside farming areas and inland zones. The terrain mixes water bodies, agricultural land, and settlements spread across its boundaries.

The district was established in 1845 and later merged with Chilaw district in 1958 to create its current administrative form. This combination shaped how the region is organized today.

Religious buildings of different faiths sit side by side throughout the region, reflecting how communities of various beliefs live together in the same towns and villages.

The railway to Colombo and roads to other major cities provide the main ways to reach and travel through this area. Visitors can move around using different transport options depending on where they want to explore.

The lagoon here supports both traditional fishing methods and modern shrimp farming side by side in the same waters. This blend of old and new practices makes it an unusual place where generations of fishing traditions meet contemporary aquaculture.
