Rif, Mountain range in northern Morocco
The Rif is a mountain range extending about 290 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast in northern Morocco. It runs from Tangier to the Moulouya River valley near the Algerian border and features mountainous terrain with numerous valleys and ridges.
In the 1920s, Berber tribes under the leadership of Abd el-Krim mounted strong resistance against Franco-Spanish colonial forces. This movement became a turning point in the region's colonial history and demonstrated local determination to resist foreign rule.
The Berber communities living in these mountains speak their own languages and maintain craft traditions passed down through generations. In the villages, you can observe traditional ways of life and farming methods that have shaped the region's identity for centuries.
The best time for hiking in this mountain region is from March to June when conditions are mild and dry. Visitors should prepare for varying elevations and bring appropriate gear for changeable weather conditions.
The highest peak in this mountain range is Mount Tidirhine, rising to about 2,456 meters (8,060 feet) above sea level. Winter snows cover this summit, making it a rare sight for this northern latitude.
