The Great Mosque of Tinmel, Religious monument in High Atlas Mountains, Morocco
The Great Mosque of Tinmel is a religious structure in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco featuring thick walls and a rectangular floor plan of approximately 43 by 40 meters. A central minaret stands along the southern wall of the building.
The building was constructed in 1153 under the Almohad dynasty and served as a spiritual center and burial site of Ibn Tumart, the founder of the Almohad movement. Its foundation was closely tied to the spread of a new religious and political force in the region.
The mosque displays Almohad design principles through geometric patterns, pointed horseshoe arches, and minimal decoration. These architectural features reflect the artistic tradition that was practiced in this region during medieval times.
The building remains open to visitors throughout the year and is one of only two mosques in Morocco that permits entry to non-Muslim visitors. Travelers should expect uneven paths and mountainous terrain and wear appropriate clothing along with sturdy shoes.
A September 2023 earthquake caused severe damage to the mosque shortly after the building had completed an extensive restoration project. The rebuilding thus presented a new challenge for the preservation of this medieval site.
