Millennium Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Podgorica, Montenegro
The Millennium Bridge is a steel cable-stayed structure spanning 140 meters across the Moraca River and rising 57 meters high. It carries two traffic lanes and pedestrian pathways connecting the central business district with residential zones on the opposite riverbank.
The bridge was built after Montenegro's independence and opened officially on July 13, 2005, during the country's National Day celebrations. It was part of the modern infrastructure development that the nation pursued following its separation from Serbia.
The bridge links the historic city center with newer neighborhoods and shapes how Podgorica's growth appears to visitors. Walking across it, one can see how the city expanded after independence.
The bridge is easily accessible for both vehicles and pedestrians with dedicated pathways for each. It is open year-round and located centrally, making it simple to reach from various parts of the city.
The structure uses a sophisticated system of counterweights and additional steel cables to stabilize its slender appearance. This clever design allows it to look minimalist while handling the significant forces from traffic and weather.
