Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus, Brutalist Catholic church in Konik, Podgorica, Montenegro
The Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus is a concrete structure with an unfinished facade and a prominent 40-meter bell tower in the Konik neighborhood. Its dark interior is shaped by light filtering through tall openings in the tower, creating a distinctive visual effect.
The church was built in 1969 to replace a previous structure destroyed during World War II. It emerged during a period when religious activities faced significant restrictions in the former Yugoslavia.
The church serves as a spiritual center for the local Albanian Catholic community, hosting regular services and celebrations. It remains the only Roman Catholic place of worship in the capital and holds deep meaning for its congregation.
The church lies about 15 minutes from Kraljev Park and can be reached by following the main boulevard southeastward through the neighborhood. Its location near the city center makes it accessible for most visitors.
Architect Zvonimir Vrkljan designed the church to resemble a ship, complete with spiral concrete staircases and a backlit cross above the main altar. This unusual form combines practical function with symbolic meaning.
