Depedogen

Depedogen is a stone fortress positioned above the meeting point of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, with defensive walls and towers built during Ottoman times. The structure occupies a strategic location that commands views over the valley and river crossings.

The fortress was built around 1477 during Ottoman rule and quickly became a key military post in the region. A lightning strike in 1878 ignited ammunition stored inside and caused extensive damage to the fortification.

The fortress bears the alternate name Nemanjin Grad because it is believed to be the birthplace of Stefan Nemanja, founder of the medieval Nemanjić dynasty. This connection shapes how local people understand their regional heritage.

Access is available throughout the year, and guided tours help visitors understand the architecture and defense structures. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended since the stairs and pathways on the grounds can be uneven.

Orthodox ceremonies take place at this site, linking present-day religious practice with the region's medieval past. These traditions show how local people sustain their spiritual identity through such historical locations.
