Dajbabe Monastery

Dajbabe Monastery merges natural cave systems with built structures to form a complex of underground chambers and surface buildings. Passages link these areas together, allowing visitors to move freely between excavated spaces and constructed sections.

The monastery was founded in 1897 following the end of Turkish rule, when a monk experienced a vision at this location. This establishment marked a religious renewal in the region after decades of foreign control.

The cave church displays religious paintings that visitors encounter as they move through natural stone chambers, creating an intimate encounter with faith. The artworks feel integrated into the rock itself rather than added to finished walls.

The monastery sits on the southern side of town and is accessible by walking routes. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since underground areas can be cool and occasionally damp.

The monastery holds an ancient shroud from the 10th century and a sacred image from Jerusalem that are rarely displayed. These precious objects connect the location to distant religious histories beyond its local origins.
