Durmitor National Park, National park and UNESCO World Heritage Site in northwestern Montenegro.

Durmitor National Park is a large mountain area in northwestern Montenegro with numerous high peaks and clear lakes scattered across its higher elevations. The terrain spans roughly 39,000 hectares of slopes, forests, and alpine zones that together form different habitats for wildlife.

The area became a national park in 1952 when Montenegro chose to protect its natural landscapes and wildlife. This early designation made it one of the oldest protected areas in the region.

The people living here have built their lives around the mountains and their rhythms. You see traditional stone and wooden houses throughout the area, and locals gather around foods made from what the land offers across the seasons.

The town of Žabljak at the park's edge offers lodging, equipment rentals, and experienced guides for different activities. It makes sense to gather information there before heading into the higher or more remote areas.

The Tara River cuts through the area and creates one of Europe's deepest canyons, plunging more than 1,300 meters down. This striking geological feature often surprises visitors when they first encounter the true scale of the gorge.
