Black Lake, Glacial lake in Durmitor National Park, Montenegro.
Black Lake consists of two connected water bodies known as Big Lake and Little Lake, sitting at 1,416 meters elevation. Dense pine forests surround the site, separating it from the steep rock walls of Durmitor mountain.
The lake formed roughly 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age, when glaciers in the Durmitor range retreated and melted. This geological feature still shows traces of those ancient glacial movements today.
The local name Crno Jezero refers to the dark color of the water, caused by algae and depth rather than any sinister quality. You'll notice this distinctive hue immediately when you arrive, especially on cloudy days.
A marked trail of about 3.6 kilometers circles the entire lake, offering views of both water sections and surrounding terrain. The path is walkable and provides several natural stopping points along the route.
The smaller of the two lakes actually contains more water than the larger one, thanks to its greater depth, creating a surprising geographical contradiction. This hidden feature goes unnoticed by many visitors who assume bigger means deeper.
