Great Mosque of Djenné
Great Mosque of Djenné, Adobe mosque in Djenné, Mali
The mosque features massive wooden beams protruding from its walls, tall minarets, and a large prayer hall supported by ninety wooden pillars.
Following the destruction of earlier structures, the current mosque was constructed between 1906 and 1907 using local materials and traditional building techniques.
The mosque serves as a center for Islamic education, with students gathering in its courtyard to study religious texts and traditional teachings.
Every spring, the entire community participates in the replastering festival, where they apply fresh mud coating to protect the structure from weather damage.
With its walls measuring three feet thick and reaching heights of 16 meters, this building stands as the largest mud brick structure in the world.
