Kanbawzathadi Palace is a royal palace in Bago, Myanmar, featuring a Great Audience Hall supported by massive teak pillars. The entire interior is covered in gold paint, reflecting the grandeur of the original design.
The palace was built in 1556 under King Bayinnaung and originally contained 76 rooms and halls. It was destroyed in 1599 but was carefully reconstructed in the early 1990s.
Visitors can observe the craftsmanship on the wooden pillars, which are decorated with inscriptions from centuries past. These details reveal how important this place was to the people who built and maintained it.
The site is located south of Shwemawdaw Pagoda and is open daily, with comfortable shoes recommended for exploring. Most areas are accessible at ground level, but arriving early helps you avoid crowds.
Excavations at the site uncovered nearly 2,000 Buddha images and hundreds of original teak pillars. These discoveries are displayed in an adjacent museum, revealing details about the structure's original splendor.
