Har Us Nuur National Park, National park and Ramsar wetland site in Khovd Province, Mongolia.
Har Us Nuur National Park is a large protected area in Khovd Province containing three shallow lakes surrounded by extensive reed beds and wetland areas. The entire zone functions as a critical habitat for numerous water and land species.
This place was once part of a much larger water system that extended across the region thousands of years ago. The lakes today are remnants of that older network that was fed by mountain sources from the Altai range.
The lakes and marshlands shape how local herding communities live and move with their animals across seasons. People view this place as essential to their pastoral way of life and connection to the land.
Spring and autumn are the best times to see migrating birds, when large flocks gather in the region. Access is through designated entry points, and visitors should prepare for harsh weather conditions and long distances.
The park is home to three fish species found nowhere else in the world, existing only in these lakes. It also provides refuge for one of the last remaining populations of the White-headed Duck, a species threatened globally.
