Saluting Battery, Artillery battery in Upper Barrakka Gardens, Valletta, Malta
Eight bronze cannons line the stone platform of this military fortification, offering views across the Grand Harbour of Malta.
The battery, built in 1566 on the site of an Ottoman position, protected Malta through multiple conflicts until the British departed in 1954.
The noon and four o'clock daily cannon firings maintain a centuries-old tradition of signaling maritime vessels in the Grand Harbour.
Visitors can access the battery from Monday through Saturday between 10:00 and 16:30, with entry fees of 3 euros for adults.
The underground complex beneath the battery became the Lascaris War Rooms, serving as NATO's Mediterranean submarine monitoring station until 1977.
