Maafushi

Maafushi is an inhabited island in Kaafu Atoll stretching roughly one kilometer long with white sand beaches lining its shores. The island has a narrow, elongated shape and feels compact, with homes, guesthouses, shops, and restaurants filling the available space throughout.

The island was severely damaged by a tsunami in 2004, requiring substantial reconstruction of homes and infrastructure. This disaster prompted the installation of new systems and reshaped how the settlement was rebuilt and organized.

The island preserves traditional Maldivian customs that shape daily life and social practices among residents. You can observe how fishing traditions and community gatherings remain central to how people spend their time here.

You can reach the island from the capital Male in about 30 minutes by speedboat or roughly 90 minutes by public ferry. Since the island is very compact, it is easy to explore on foot, and most guesthouses and restaurants are within walking distance of each other.

The island has become the foremost local tourism destination in the country and accommodates more guesthouses than any other inhabited island nationwide. This rapid growth transformed it from a quiet fishing village into a thriving arrival point for travelers.
