Theemuge, Former presidential palace in Malé, Maldives
Theemuge is a white and blue three-story mansion in Malé that combines traditional Maldivian architectural elements with modern design on Orchid Magu street. The building showcases a distinctive color scheme and blends classical and contemporary design features.
The building was commissioned by President Abdul Gayoom in 1994 and served as the presidential residence until 2008. After a new government took office, the seat of power moved to a different location.
The name Theemuge references the first dynasty of the Maldives and its early Muslim rulers from the Lunar Dynasty period. Locals and visitors connect this place to an important chapter of their national identity.
The building now houses the Supreme Court of the Maldives, and you can view and photograph the exterior. It is conveniently located in the central district and can be easily included in walks around the capital.
The building was originally an ambitious construction project that required substantial government investment when it was built. This investment reflects the important role the site has played in the country's modern development.
