Markermeer, lake in the Netherlands
Markermeer is a large lake near Amsterdam separated from the Ijsselmeer by a dike. It spans a vast expanse of open water that serves as a popular destination for recreational boating and water sports.
Markermeer was created in the 1970s when the Afsluitdijk divided the original Ijsselmeer into two separate bodies of water. This division was part of a major Dutch land reclamation project that reshaped the region's water and land areas.
The lake is most accessible from May through September for boating and water activities. Various landing spots and rest areas line the shore, making it easy to find places to stop and enjoy the water.
