Turtagrø, building in Luster, Norway
Turtagrø is a mountain hotel and tourist cabin in Luster located at 884 meters elevation and serves as a base for climbers and hikers. It provides direct access to Jotunheimen National Park with its steep rock faces, glaciers, and mountain ranges that offer opportunities for various outdoor activities.
The location was developed as a tourism destination in the 1880s after a successful mountain climb in 1876 sparked interest in the region. The first hotel was built in 1888, and the Swiss Villa, which still stands today, marks the beginning of organized mountain tourism in this area.
The name Turtagrø refers to its mountain setting in Norwegian. Today the place serves as a meeting point for climbers and hikers who come together to pursue their interests in these peaks.
The location is open from Easter to mid-September and offers snow activities on nearby slopes in late spring. Hikes and climbing routes are available directly from the hotel or in the nearby national park, with many trails offering varying difficulty levels.
Fanaråkhytta, a mountain lodge at 2,068 meters elevation, is the highest permanently staffed hut in Norway. It operates from July to September and is visited by hikers climbing Fanaråken, a mountain reachable in 6 to 8 hours from the hotel.
