Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate

Ash Sharqiyah South is an administrative region in southeastern Oman with varied terrain including coastal areas, mountains, and desert plains. Sur serves as the main administrative center, while four other districts complete the governorate.

The region was created when the former Ash Sharqiyah was divided into two separate governorates in 2011. This administrative reorganization reshaped how the country managed its southern coastal territories.

Sur, the capital, has long been known for building traditional dhow sailing vessels by hand. Local craftsmen still use methods that have been passed down through families for centuries.

The region extends from the coast inland, with most settlements concentrated along the shoreline and in the main administrative hub. Travelers should expect varied climate conditions as they move between coastal, mountain, and desert zones.

The beaches near Sur attract sea turtles that come ashore each year to lay their eggs. This seasonal occurrence draws nature enthusiasts from around the world.
