Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate

The governorate spans across coastal areas, mountains, and desert landscapes, with Sur serving as its capital and main administrative center.

The region emerged from the division of Ash Sharqiyah Region into two separate governorates on October 28, 2011, marking a shift in Oman's administrative structure.

Sur, the capital city, maintains a long tradition of dhow shipbuilding, representing the maritime skills and craftsmanship passed through generations.

The governorate comprises five provinces including Sur, Al-Kamil and Al-Wafi, Jalan Bani Bu Hassan, Jalan Bani Bu Ali, and Masirah Island.

Green turtles select the beaches near Sur as nesting grounds, with 13,000 turtles arriving annually to lay their eggs on the coastal shores.
