Nueva Vizcaya, Province in Cagayan Valley, Philippines
Nueva Vizcaya is a province in the Cagayan Valley region on the northern island of Luzon in the Philippines. The territory covers mountain ranges, valleys, forested slopes, and several rivers that cut through the rugged landscape between two major mountain systems.
The Spanish colonial administration created the province in the mid-19th century, while Catholic missionaries had arrived in the area more than two centuries earlier. The territorial organization followed the pattern of colonial administrative units established across Luzon during that period.
The province houses 18 distinct indigenous groups, including the Ifugao, Gaddang, and Dumagat tribes, each maintaining their traditional practices and languages.
Local vehicles and road connections allow movement across the province, with main towns connected by paved highways. Mountain roads can become difficult during heavy rains, so checking weather conditions before traveling to higher elevations is advisable.
Citrus plantations, especially pomelos and oranges, cover much of the farmland across valleys and hillsides. Growing these fruits forms a major part of the regional economy, and many local markets sell fresh produce directly from surrounding farms.
