University of the Philippines, Research university in Ermita, Manila, Philippines
The University of the Philippines Manila is a research university in Ermita and covers 14 hectares in the urban area of Manila. It serves as the national center for education and research in health sciences with several faculties and clinical facilities on the grounds.
The institution was founded in 1905 as the Philippine Medical School and received its current designation in 1983. It emerged from the need for a national medical training facility during the American colonial period and later expanded into a comprehensive health university.
The campus preserves several structures from before World War II, including Rizal Hall with its characteristic columns and wide verandas in the style of the American colonial period. These buildings now serve as teaching spaces and connect the daily life of students with the architectural past of the grounds.
Access to the campus grounds is through Taft Avenue and Padre Faura Street, with pathways between buildings partly paved and partly cobbled. The Philippine General Hospital on campus admits patients from across the country and operates alongside the regular university activities.
The School of Health Sciences offers a direct admission program for scholars from underserved regions to address the shortage of medical staff in rural areas. Many graduates return to their home communities after their studies and take over healthcare responsibilities there.
