Hyatt Terraces Baguio Hotel was a multi-story building designed with stepped levels that followed the slope of the mountainside near Camp John Hay. The structure accommodated hundreds of guest rooms arranged across interconnected floors that descended with the terrain.
The hotel opened in 1976 to host an international conference and stood as the only five-star property outside Manila for many years. A major earthquake in 1990 caused the building to collapse.
The building design reflected local heritage by incorporating architectural elements inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces and mountain art of the Cordillera region.
The building was located on sloped terrain and required navigation through multiple connected pathways at different elevations. Visitors should have been prepared for the varied floor levels and elevation changes.
A hotel cook survived for two weeks trapped beneath the collapse debris, becoming one of the most remarkable survival stories of the disaster. This rescue gained international attention and remained a symbol of hope following the catastrophe.
