Biafo Glacier, Massive glacier in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
Biafo Glacier is a massive ice field in the Karakoram Mountains with steep walls of ice mixed with rocky surfaces throughout. The terrain shifts constantly between wide ice plains and sections filled with crevasses and boulders.
This ice field served as a trade route between the mountain regions of Nagar and Baltistan for many centuries. The passage allowed exchange of goods and knowledge between remote communities.
Local communities in the region have passed down knowledge about living in high mountain environments through generations. Visitors can observe traces of these traditions in villages near the glacier today.
Exploring this glacier requires specialized mountaineering equipment, experienced guides, and good physical fitness. The best time to visit is between May and September when snow and ice conditions are most stable.
At its southern end, this glacier connects with Hispar Glacier to form one of the world's longest ice corridors. This junction exists because both ice masses have slowly advanced and merged over thousands of years.
