Trango Tower, Granite mountain summit in Shigar District, Pakistan
Trango Tower is a granite summit in the Karakoram range that rises to 6,251 meters and features exceptionally steep rock faces. The mountain offers various climbing routes suited to different skill levels.
British mountaineer Joe Brown made the first successful ascent in 1976, establishing the initial route to the peak. This achievement brought the tower into focus as a major climbing destination in the Karakoram.
The tower stands near settlements of the Balti people, whose way of life has long been shaped by these mountains and the expeditions that pass through their lands. Local communities play an essential role in guiding and supporting climbers who attempt the route.
Climbers typically reach the tower through Skardu and proceed to Askole village, from where a lengthy trek leads to base camp. Summer months offer the best climbing conditions when passes and trails are accessible.
The south face rises 650 meters vertically with overhanging rock sections that demand advanced technical expertise. This wall ranks among the world's most demanding climbing routes and attracts elite mountaineers from around the globe.
