Godwin-Austen Glacier, Large glacier in Karakoram range, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan
The Godwin-Austen Glacier extends over 60 kilometers through the Karakoram range, connecting with the Baltoro Glacier at a location known as Concordia.
British surveyor Henry Haversham Godwin-Austen conducted the first comprehensive mapping of this glacier during his expedition to the Karakoram region in the 19th century.
The local Balti people maintain traditional settlements near the glacier, preserving ancient customs and narratives about the mountains through generations of inhabitants.
Access to the glacier starts from Skardu town, requiring a multi-day trek through Askole village with guidance from experienced local mountaineering professionals.
The glacier forms part of a natural amphitheater at Concordia, surrounded by four peaks above 8,000 meters, including K2, the second-highest mountain on Earth.
