Gasherbrum II East, Mountain peak in Shigar District, Pakistan and China
Gasherbrum II East is a mountain peak in the Karakoram range that rises to 7,758 meters and forms the border between Pakistan and China. The summit sits within Shigar District and ranks among the high peaks climbers attempt in this mountain system.
The peak received its K4 designation during the Great Trigonometric Survey of India carried out by T.G. Montgomerie in 1856. This early mapping shaped how European explorers referred to summits throughout the Karakoram range.
The name derives from Balti language terminology, where local inhabitants have passed down mountaineering knowledge through multiple generations of expedition support.
Climbing expeditions take place mainly between June and September when weather conditions are most favorable. You will need permits from both Pakistani and Chinese authorities and must hire experienced local guides for any attempt.
The mountain presents technical climbing challenges through its combination of steep ice walls, snow fields, and high-altitude conditions above 7,000 meters.
