Concordia, Glacial confluence in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.
Concordia is where the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers meet, forming a vast plain of white ice at 4,600 meters (15,100 feet) in the Karakoram range. The landscape spreads across endless frozen terrain surrounded by towering rocky peaks on all sides.
European explorers named this location after a similar glacial junction in Switzerland's Alps while mapping the Karakoram region in the 1800s. The site gained recognition when mountaineering expeditions began systematically exploring the high peaks surrounding it.
Local mountain guides and porters have passed down generations of expertise about navigating this high-altitude route safely. Their knowledge shapes how visitors today experience this remote glacial meeting point.
Reaching this location requires departing from Skardu and committing several weeks to trek along established routes on the glacier. Warm clothing, sturdy boots, and proper acclimatization to extreme altitude are essential for this challenging journey.
From this glacial junction, four of the world's highest peaks over 8,000 meters stand visible in the distance: K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II. This vantage point offers one of the few places on Earth where visitors can observe so many of these mountain giants from a single location.
