Thal, Desert region in Punjab, Pakistan
Thal is a desert region spanning the Bhakkar District between the Indus River and the Jhelum and Chenab rivers in Punjab. Irrigation systems allow farming of wheat, cotton, rice, and sugarcane across selected areas of the landscape.
The area was originally forested but gradually became arid, prompting the construction of major irrigation projects. The Jinnah Barrage became a turning point in bringing water to support farming across the landscape.
Local communities maintain traditions through seasonal festivals that display regional crafts, agricultural products, and tribal ceremonies specific to the desert region.
The region is best explored during the dry season when roads are easily passable and conditions remain stable. Visitors should prepare for flat, open terrain and bring plenty of water and sun protection.
During monsoon season, seasonal rivers create temporary water channels that allow specific plant species to flourish. These brief transformations show how responsive the landscape is to water availability.
