The district spans 6,726 square kilometers between Tando Allahyar District to the north and the Indian border to the south of Pakistan.

The region served as a center of the Indus Valley civilization and came under Mughal control in 1592, later becoming a district in 1975.

The district population includes 74 percent Muslims and 25 percent Hindus, with Sindhi language speakers representing 93 percent of residents.

The University of Sindh Laar Campus provides higher education programs, while six sugar mills and rice husking facilities support the agricultural economy.

The Badin Coal Field contains 1.358 billion metric tons of coal reserves across 1,110 square kilometers within the district territory.
