Jamia Mosque, Kalhora period mosque in Khudabad, Pakistan
The Jamia Mosque is a prayer house from the Kalhora period with a large central courtyard, surrounded by halls for worshippers, and a grand entrance arch. A semi-circular staircase on the eastern side provides access to the entrance.
The building was constructed between 1700 and 1718 during the reign of Yar Muhammad Kalhoro in the former capital. Beyond serving as a prayer site, it also functioned as a military training ground.
The walls display geometric patterns and floral designs that reflect the artistic techniques of the Kalhora dynasty. These decorations show how skilled craftsmen worked to enhance the sacred space with intricate details.
Visitors should exercise caution as the structure sustained significant damage from heavy rains in 1994 that caused one dome to collapse and affected other sections. It is wise to move carefully and avoid unstable areas during your visit.
In 2015, LUMS students created detailed digital scans of the remaining tile work and fresco paintings. These recordings preserve crucial details for potential restoration efforts in the future.
