Kaghan Valley, Alpine valley in Mansehra District, Pakistan.
Kaghan Valley is a mountain valley in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that spans roughly 155 kilometers and rises from lower elevations to high alpine terrain. It features green meadows, coniferous forests, and waterfalls that feed the river running through the valley.
The valley served as an important route for trade and travel in the Himalayan region until a major earthquake in 2005 damaged roads and bridges. Rebuilding efforts since then have made the area more accessible.
The valley is home to different ethnic groups including Syed, Pathan Khan, Durrani, Mughal, Swati, and Gujjar communities who maintain traditional ways of life. These groups have shaped the local customs and use the meadows and forests for livestock herding and farming.
Access runs through Balakot and Mansehra, with buses operating during summer months while winter conditions make travel difficult. It is wise to bring plenty of water and provisions, as temperature varies significantly depending on elevation.
The valley contains two national parks with multiple mountain lakes, including the turquoise Saiful Muluk lake surrounded by pine forests. These lakes were formed by glacier movement and rank among the most beautiful water bodies in the region.
