Nishtar Medical University, university and former medical college in Punjab, Pakistan
Nishtar Medical University is a school for medicine, dentistry, nursing, and health sciences in Multan, Pakistan. The campus features classic buildings with high ceilings and large windows situated beside a major hospital where students gain practical training.
The idea began in 1945 when Punjab had only one medical school in Lahore. After Pakistan's independence in 1947, the government decided in 1950 to establish a new medical college in Multan, with construction starting in 1951 and the first class beginning in 1956.
The university is named after Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar, a leader who fought for Pakistan's independence and later served as governor. His name represents strength and dedication that continues to inspire students and staff in their daily work.
The university sits on a large campus beside the hospital, with student hostels for those traveling from far away. The grounds are easy to navigate, with teaching areas and specialized training rooms for practical instruction.
The hospital opened in 1953 with 80 beds and has grown to over 1700 beds today, making it a major facility for the region. The institution was upgraded from a college to full university status in 2017, allowing it to expand research and advanced training programs.
