Roshnai Gate, City gate in Walled City of Lahore, Pakistan.
Roshnai Gate is an entry point into the Walled City with wide openings and tall walls designed to accommodate large processions. The structure displays architectural features from multiple construction periods and connects surrounding areas.
The gate originated during the Mughal period as a primary entrance for emperors and nobility traveling with elephant caravans. It remained in use during the Sikh period and maintained its role as a central passage.
The gate connects Hazuri Bagh to the Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort, forming a central axis that links these landmarks. Today, visitors experience how these sites relate to one another through this connecting passage.
The gate is accessible through multiple pedestrian pathways, with parking areas near Hazuri Bagh. Visiting early in the morning offers the best experience, as foot traffic is lighter and lighting conditions are clearer.
The name Roshnai means 'light' in Urdu and comes from the practice of illuminating the gate at night to guide arriving travelers. This nighttime lighting system was an important marker for caravans during Mughal times.
