Piekary Śląskie, Industrial city in Upper Silesia, Poland
The city spans 40 square kilometers along the Brynica river in the Silesian Highlands, forming part of the Katowice metropolitan region.
The merger of Szarlej and Wielkie Piekary communes in 1934 created the foundation for the current city, which received its name Piekary Śląskie in 1935.
The Basilica of St. Mary and St. Bartholomew contains a revered painting that draws thousands of Catholic pilgrims to this spiritual center of Upper Silesia.
The Centre of Sport and Recreation extends across 10 hectares, providing numerous facilities for physical activities and outdoor entertainment.
A 30-meter Liberation Mound stands in the city commemorating the Silesian Uprisings, constructed with soil from multiple battle locations.
