Volovec, Mountain summit in Western Tatras, Slovakia
Wołowiec rises to 2064 meters and sits between Ostrý Roháč and Deravá peaks along the main ridge forming the Slovakia-Poland border. Multiple marked trails connect this summit to surrounding valleys through well-established mountain paths.
In 1820, this peak served as a triangulation point during one of the first precise elevation surveys in the Western Tatras. This early measurement helped establish accurate mapping of the region.
Three valleys frame this peak: the Polish Chochołowska Valley and the Slovak Roháčska and Jamnícka Valleys, which shape how people move between countries. Hikers experience where mountain traditions from both nations meet in daily practice.
Hikers should follow the T2-marked main route that connects multiple peaks and is accessible from different valleys. The elevation gain and mountain terrain require good fitness and proper mountain equipment.
The peak contains distinctive metamorphic rocks like Alaskite and Mylonite that shape the visible geology of the Tatras. These rock formations also support Tatra chamois and Alpine marmots that inhabit the slopes.
