Veľká Kamenistá

Kamienista is a granite summit in Tatra National Park with steep slopes and rocky outcrops defining its appearance. The mountainside consists of rough rock masses, and the climb crosses exposed areas with little shelter from the elements.

Slovak mountaineers documented first routes to this summit during systematic Tatra exploration in the late 1800s. These early expeditions helped establish the paths that hikers follow today.

The name Kamienista comes from Slovak, where it describes the stone-filled nature of the peak. Visitors notice this stony character immediately when walking across the bare rock surfaces and outcrops near the summit.

The climb requires sure footing on rocky ground and takes several hours depending on fitness and starting point. Visitors should prepare for changing weather since conditions in the mountains shift quickly.

From here you see the boundary between the Western and High Tatras, two geologically different mountain formations. This view reveals the different rock structures and height differences of the adjacent mountain ranges.
