Groß Iser, Mountain village in Gmina Mirsk, Poland.
Groß Iser is a mountain village in Gmina Mirsk located in a highland valley of the Jizera Mountains. The landscape is characterized by peat bogs, dense forest, and the exposed terrain typical of this border region.
The village originated in the 17th century as a refuge for religious exiles from Bohemia. After centuries of habitation, it was destroyed in 1945 during the final phase of World War II.
Residents maintained traditional mountain lifestyles through fishing, shepherding, forestry work, and the production of wool and cheese in the harsh climate.
The settlement is sparsely populated and best explored on foot, with sturdy footwear needed for boggy terrain. A converted school building provides shelter and meals for those spending time in the mountain region.
Only a handful of residents remain, operating the former school as a mountain hut for visitors. This continuity reveals how the site was repopulated after its destruction, though now in dramatically reduced numbers.
