Ogród Zamkowy w Poznaniu, Castle garden in Imperial District, Poznań, Poland
Ogród Zamkowy in Poznań is a garden along the northern side of the Imperial Castle, featuring sloped terrain that descends from vaulted undercrofts through a viewing terrace. The space connects different levels and opens views from the castle toward the city.
The garden was created in the early 1900s as part of Emperor Wilhelm II's residence and included the main garden as well as the Rose Courtyard. The entire space was fully renovated between 2001 and 2004 with new plantings of rhododendrons, boxwood, and other vegetation.
The garden holds the Katyń Monument, a memorial bench dedicated to Józef Kostrzewski, and the sculpture '5 Figures' by Magdalena Abakanowicz. These artworks shape the character of the space and invite visitors to pause and reflect.
The garden is easy to walk through with multiple paths connecting different areas, from upper terraces to lower sections. The gentle slope makes it comfortable to explore at your own pace and view the surroundings from various levels.
The garden was designed to mirror Mickiewicz Park across Independence Avenue on the opposite side. This deliberate layout with a semicircular plaza and a linden tree avenue shows a thoughtful urban connection between the two green spaces.
